   Getting Started

All riders must be certified to ride the velodrome.  Certification is granted by the Director of the Velodrome.

To sign up for a class, click here.

There are a number of options for riders to get certified.  For all classes and sessions, see the Training page for fee information, and the Calendar for scheduling information.  For each class you can also click on the title link for a more detailed description.

Introductory Class

The Intro Class is a four session class (once per week for four weeks) for anyone who can ride a bike.  New intro classes start every month or two (see Calendar), and are typically from noon to 2pm on Sundays. The objective is to instill in riders safe riding skills, etiquette, and regulations. These will be enjoyable and engaging sessions showing people how to have more fun on the track.  Riders should bring pedals, shoes, and helmets if they have them.  Rental pedals and helmets are also available.  Riders who are already certified are encouraged to attend this extended practice as well, to refine their track skills, and learn (or re-learn) tips and tricks that will improve their riding and fun.

Accelerated Class

The Accelerated Class is an orientation for experienced riders (extensive track, road, cx, mtb, bmx experience).   This class is a one session class that helps experienced riders get used to the nuances of the Home Depot Center Velodrome, adapting their existing skills to this facility. Rules, safety, and etiquette are stressed. This class is an orientation for experienced track riders.  The accelerated class is offered at 2 pm most Saturdays.  Rental bikes are available except on Saturdays with racing (see the Calendar or the Race Schedule).  Riders can get a head start on this class by reviewing the accelerated class summary prior to coming to the track. Riders should bring pedals, shoes, and helmets if they have them.  Rental pedals and helmets are also available.

Clubs Program

The Clubs Program is a cost effective way for local cycling clubs to get exclusive track time for their members to train and for members inexperienced at the track to get certified to ride in public training sessions.  Depending on your club's needs, instruction and/or rental bikes can be provided.  There are enough rental bikes available to fill the track, but riders can double up on bikes if necessary-- new riders often will want to take breaks that are long enough for another rider to spend some quality time on the track with the same bike.  Contact Track Director Roger Young at LAVelodrome@aol.com for reservations and details on bikes and instruction. Riders should bring pedals, shoes, and helmets if they have them.  Rental pedals and helmets are also available.

Category 1 and 2 Track Riders

Riders with a USA Cycling Category 1 or 2 track license or Professional license are not required to attend a certification class, but are encouraged to review the accelerated class summary to learn the local rules and etiquette and address equipment questions.

Sample Ride

The Sample Ride program is a one-time try at riding the velodrome for those excited about the track and who simply have to try it once. Riders will get some safety and skill instruction then get on the track. It's recommended that you wear sports clothes.  Completing a sample ride does not certify a rider to ride any other sessions at the velodrome.  The sample ride program is by appointment only. All equipment is provided, but riders should bring pedals, shoes, and helmets if they have them.  Contact Track Director Roger Young at LAVelodrome@aol.com to arrange an appointment.

All riders must have a current valid USA Cycling license. Licenses may be purchased online at www.usacycling.org.

   Home Depot Center Velodrome Club

Everyone signing the annual Home Depot Center release will automatically become members of the Home Depot Center Velodrome club. Members have neither expressed nor assumed rights nor privileges related to the club and the facility. However, members [all track users] are responsible for checking in before any ride on the track. Members are also responsible for following all of the facility's rules and policies.

   Safety Recommendations

The Home Depot Center Velodrome takes safety as its primary concern. Helmets and bikes must adhere to USA Cycling standards. We recommend tightened, well-adjusted components and properly secured tires.
