  Ladies Day at the Track

ADT Ladies Only Session #2

November 11, 2006

I can not say "Thank you" enough to everyone who has helped make these sessions so successful!!

On Saturday November 11th, we had more than 60 women show up for the second of four Ladies Only Track Sessions. Not only did we have nearly 30 Ladies return to the track from the first session, but we also had more than 30 brand new ladies attend for the first time; Ladies who had never been on this or any other track before!!

While ADT velodrome director, Roger Young, taught the Certification Class for the new ladies in attendance, the rest of us were down on the track working out together led by World Champion Sarah Hammer. We began by splitting into 2 groups for a 15 min pace line style warm-up. Those who considered themselves advanced rode at a faster pace up on the blue line behind Sarah while the newer riders rode a bit slower down on the black line behind Karla Bland.  After a brief rest and discussion break, we returned to the track for 15 more min of pace line style interval work.

After another brief break we divided into smaller groups on the apron as we learned how to and practiced "floating the pedals". This is best learned at low speed using effort changes while maintaining an even distance between the riders and the 3 groups. Floating is a skill that will allow the riders to draft with confidence.

An hour into the session, the newest track riders made their way down to the track after the instruction part of the session was complete.  Our team of helpers, coaches and mentors were waiting with smiles, tools and bikes.  They eagerly assisted all the ladies with pedal changes, bike sizing and seat adjustments. Thanks to everyone involved, the ladies were able to get on their bikes. With some experienced mentors and a little confidence, everyone made it safely up on and around the track.

As with the first session, no one wanted to leave! Half an hour after the session officially ended the track was still full of riders!

The theme of this session was "Bring a friend". All the ladies who brought a friend received a coupon for a free training session or a free bike rental. What is really neat is that all of those ladies then turned around and gave their coupon to their friend as an incentive to keep their friend coming back for more!! How cool is that!!

The November ADT Ladies Only Session was awesome! I can't wait for the December 9th “Dream Team” Session where we are planning to have some more fun as we learn and train together!

If you are a team captain, director or coach and are interested in our December Dream Team Theme, please email me for more info. We want to promote your team in December.
