HISTORIC WORLD HOUR RECORD ATTEMPT TO BE MADE BY
DAVID ZABRISKIE THIS SUNDAY AT THE HOME DEPOT CENTER
CARSON, CALIFORNIA (Friday, December 15, 2006) – Team CSC rider and
Tour de France yellow jersey rider David Zabriskie will attempt
to break the historic “World Hour Record” this Sunday,
December 17 at 9:00 a.m. at the ADT Event Center at The Home Depot
Center. The record for the longest distance cycled in one hour on a
bicycle was last attempted in 2005 in Moscow, Russia.
One of cycling’s most prestigious records, the World Hour Record will
be attempted by Zabriskie, who posted the fastest time trial in Tour de
France history and wore the yellow leaders jersey. One of the most
accomplished U.S. road cyclists, Zabriskie also placed second at the
inaugural Amgen Tour of California, a 600-mile, eight day stage
race down the California coast in February 2005.
The “World Hour Record” is the oldest human performance record kept
since 1887, and while not attempted every year, Ondrej Sosenka (Czechloslovakia)
broke the record in 2005 in Moscow, Russia and Chris Boardman (United
Kingdom) attempted and broke the World hour record in 2000. Before
2000, only one other rider broke the record in 1972 – Eddy Merckx
(Belgium) in Mexico City, Mexico.
Also being attempted this weekend is the masters record by Dr.Brent
Kay. The masters record is the record set by riders 40 years old and
older. Dr. Kay is attempting the 47km record.
This is the first time the world hour record has been attempted in the
2,450-seat indoor velodrome – The ADT Event Center at The Home Depot
Center in Carson on the campus of California State University, Dominguez
Hills in Carson, California. The 250-meter indoor track is the training
home to several USA Cycling National Team riders, including world
champion Sarah Hammer who will race at the ADT Event Center in January
2007 at the UCI Track Cycling World Cup Classics, an annual event
at the facility. The ADT Event Center has also hosted other national
and international cycling events, including the 2004 USA Junior National
Championships, 2004 Junior Worlds and the 2005 World Track Cycling
Championships.
In addition to international competition, the facility hosts regular
cycling training classes for the public for all ages and skill levels.
